Throwing out the first pitch at a baseball game is both an honor and a challenge. What makes the ceremonial first pitch unique is that the opportunity can be extended to anyone from a little kid up to a sitting US President. But unlike other ceremonial events, when throwing out a first pitch there is a very real threat of failure and embarrassment for the “honoree”. In other words, you can’t just show up, you need to perform. Putting the ball across the plate (or really just close to it) from 60 feet and 6 inches in front of 40,000 people on your first try is no easy task. And what may appear to be a simple task has humbled many of the actors, singers, dignitaries, and athletes that have attempted it. We have scoured the internet, and these are the Renaissance Fan’s picks for the worst first pitches.
A note before proceeding: we chose to only feature celebrities and athletes and not everyday people. It is our belief that celebrities living (and profiting) from being in the public eye are well-equipped to deal with some lighthearted teasing about what you are about to see. Let’s begin!
#5 Mariah Carey
Ok, so nobody expected pop icon and diva Mariah Carey to come out and fire a 97 mph heater, but one might have expected a little more when she showed up to throw out the first pitch at a game in Japan. The fact that she needs not one, but two terrifying Japanese mascots just to get out to the mound in her heels is not a good sign. The sheepish grin from the catcher doesn’t inspire much confidence either. And you can see what happens next:
Nobody can take those pipes away from you Mariah.
#4 Tiffany Hwang
Tiffant Hwang is a Korean pop star (and the top Google search result for “Tiffany__”, thankfully). I guess unless you are into Korean pop there may not be much reason to know about her career. But we do know she can spike a mean baseball. Observe:
#3 Michael Jordan
Jordan’s first pitch is bad. But it also suffers from high expectations that one of the most athleticallt talented humans in the history of our species, who at one point had an ill-conceived professional baseball career, could at least skip one into the catcher. Not the case:
MJ might be better off sticking to the 10 foot high target (which is about where he seemed to be aiming). Basketball players in general have not fared well with first pitches (and more here). Different mechanics, we get it. But I doubt Mike Trout would air ball a ceremonial tre… just saying.
#2 Carly Rae Jepsen
Once again, pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen has never given us reason to believe she has any baseball prowess, but her first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays game is bad even beyond low expectations. We consider this stinker to be karma retribution for that damn song that was stuck in our head for most of 2012 (and is now stuck in there again just from having it mentioned, sorry about that).
#1 50 Cent
If you met someone who wore a Yankees hat to work every day you might assume they know how to throw a baseball. If that person is rapper 50 Cent, your assumption would be wrong. “Fiddy” sails his first pitch at a Mets game (where he treasonously switches hat loyalty for the day!) so far to the left that the catcher doesn’t even try to make a play on it. That’s how 50 Cent earns the top spot when it comes to worst first pitches:
